I am no Mexico City expert (yet!) but I do have some recommendations. Here are my quick and dirty tips for visiting CDMX:

Airport:

  • Both cabs or Ubers are fine, but I suggest Uber, especially if you Airbnb, much easier to enter the address
  • If you do take a cab, buy a ticket from one of the taxi stands and then go to the taxi line

Where to stay:

  • We have been happy with Airbnb, but there are way cool hotels too. Either option is great, if it’s a short stay I sometimes find a hotel easier.
  • Roma/Roma Norte/Condesa are my favorite neighborhoods to stay in!

To do:

  • Museums: Chupultepec Castle, Anthropology Museum, Palacio de Bellas Artes, there are a million. Many are free to residents on Sundays, which is awesome! And crazy crowded! So, I would suggest going on a non-Sunday.
  • Walk through the park(s): Chapultepec is huge, you can spend a whole day there. There are also tons of other little parks, like Parque Mexico and Parque Espana, that are nice to stroll through on an evening walk.
  • Food Tour: I would totally recommend a food tour for your first visit to the city! We did it one of our first times here and it gave a good overview of street food, a chance to try some things that we wouldn’t have otherwise, and a guide who could answer questions. I’d recommend Eat Mexico!
  •  Coyoacan:  This charming borough is the location of the Frida Kahlo house. It’s slightly out of the way, but makes a good half-day trip. Take an Uber and check out Frieda as well as the other museums and markets while you’re in the hood. Buy your tickets to Frieda Kahlo in advance to skip the line.
  • Avenida Reforma Bike Ride on Sundays: This main road closes on every Sunday to bicycles and pedestrians.

Misc.:

  • I have AT&T down here and it works well, check with your provider some cover US/Mexico/Canada in their plans and some don’t.
  • Bring a little umbrella if you’re here May-August, it’ll rain for a bit in the afternoon.
  • Lunch is usually later, around 2pm, and long, dinner is later as well, around 8ish.
  • Wear closed toes shoes for walking (uneven sidewalks) and leave the cutoff shorts at home, style here is metropolitan/city (think SF or NYC.)
  • Speaking of walking, cars are not going to stop for you. Be an “active” pedestrian and pay attention to traffic!
  • People are super friendly and willing to help, don’t hesitate to use your bad Spanish (if you’re like me 😉 ) they will be very understanding.

Have the best time! Let me know your favorite spots in DF or if you have any questions.
